Work is underway on a £15m enhancement of the University’s sports facilities!
Phase one includes the refurbishment of all three artificial pitches at the sports grounds north of Inglemire Lane. It will also see the addition of a new 3G pitch which complies with international rugby standards – the only one in the region to do so. We’ll also be constructing a pitch-side sports pavilion which will contain changing facilities, classrooms and a physiotherapy room.
In May 2017 work will start on a 12-court sports facility including international standard netball courts and bleacher style seating for 700 spectators. We aim to make the University the regional hub for netball. The facility, being built adjacent to the current sports hall, will house a strength and conditioning suite, plus enhanced changing facilities.
The existing sports hall, which is to become a listed building, will be refurbished to a high standard. It is being turned into a 120–station fitness suite with state of the art equipment and free weights. There will also be a dance studio for fitness classes.
The development will be phased to ensure that the University sport continues with as little disruption as possible. Exciting stuff!
